A prayer rope is a simple yet deeply meaningful spiritual tool used primarily in Eastern Christian tradition, especially in Orthodox Christianity.
The prayer rope is made of a series of knots-traditionally 33, 50, 100, or more-each one carefully tied in a specific way. Its purpose is not decoration, but prayer. With each knot, a short prayer is repeated, most commonly the Jesus Prayer:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
As the fingers move from knot to knot, the mind is gently drawn away from distraction and back to God. The rhythm of repetition helps quiet the heart, encouraging inner stillness, humility, and attentiveness. In this way, the prayer rope becomes a guide for unceasing prayer, even in the midst of daily life.
